2014 World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases: Surgical prevention of femoral neck fractures in osteoporotic patients: long-term results

80 patients with severe osteoporosis and undergoing surgery for a femoral neck fracture were randomized to have the contralateral hip treated with or without the Prevention Nail System (PNS). The purpose was to determine if the PNS reduced the incidence of contralateral hip fractures in this patient population. Seven contralateral hip fractures were sustained by the study population: three treated with the PNS and four treated without. The difference in incidence of contralateral hip fractures between groups was not statistically significant.
