The Effectiveness of Warfarin Dosing from a Nomogram Compared with House Staff Dosing

214 patients scheduled to undergo total hip or knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive Warafin (as an anticoagulant to treat venous thromboembolism) either dosed using a nomogram or have the dose given by the resident housing staff at the hospital. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of nomogram dosing. There were no significant differences between groups with respect to Internal Normalized Ratio (INR's), bleeding, and thrombotic complications in the post-operative days, as well as at 3 months. This results indicated that Warafin nomograms are just as effective as dosage completed by house staff in managing post-op complications such as bleeding and thrombotic complications.
