Adjuvant Vitamin D Injection in Elderly Patients Before Intertrochanteric Fracture Surgery: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

Eighty patients with intertrochanteric fractures and sufficient Vitamin D levels were randomized to receive a single 300,000 IU intramuscular Vitamin D injection (n=40) or a placebo (n=40) prior to surgery. The primary outcome was the 6-month mortality rate, and secondary outcomes included 1-year and 2-year mortality rates and Harris Hip Scores (HHS) at 6, 12, and 24 months post-surgery. Overall, there were no statistically significant differences between the intervention and placebo groups in mortality rates at any time point or in HHS changes over the follow-up period. The study concludes that a single high-dose Vitamin D injection did not significantly affect survival or functional outcomes in this patient population.
