A systematic review and meta-analysis of vitamin D and calcium in preventing osteoporotic fractures

Ten randomized controlled trials were included in this meta-analysis comparing patients 50 years or older receiving vitamin D combined with calcium vs. placebo for the prevention of osteoporotic fractures. The outcomes of interest included pooled incidence of total fractures, hip fractures, and wrist fractures. Pooled results revealed that the risk of sustaining total fractures was statistically significantly reduced in the Vitamin D plus calcium group compared to placebo (RR=0.74 [95%CI 0.58, 0.94]; p=0.01). Moreover, pooled results revealed that the risk of sustaining a hip fracture was also statistically significantly reduced in the Vitamin D plus calcium group compared to the placebo group (RR=0.61 [95%CI 0.4, 0.92]; p=0.02). However, no statistical difference in the pooled risk of sustaining a wrist fracture was observed between the two groups (p=0.18).
