Viscosupplementation for knee osteoarthritis: systematic review and meta-analysis
BMJ. 2022; 378: e069722.169 trials including 21,163 patients with knee osteoarthritis were included in this meta-analysis comparing viscosupplementation with placebo/no intervention. The primary outcome of interest was pain intensity. Secondary outcomes of interest included function and the risk of serious adverse events. The results of the pooled meta-analysis found that small improvements in pain and function that were not clinically significant were observed with viscosupplementation. A significantly higher risk of serious adverse events was observed with the use of viscosupplementation.
