The efficacy of intraarticular viscosupplementation after arthroscopic partial meniscectomy: a randomized controlled trial.

Fifty patients undergoing arthroscopic partial meniscectomy were randomized to receive an intraoperative intraarticular viscosupplementation injection (n=25) or no injection (n=25). The primary outcome of interest was knee pain measured with a visual analogue scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes of interest included patient reported outcomes measured with the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC), Tegner, Lysholm, and Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores and range of motion. The viscosupplementation group had lower pain scores and higher range of motion at 2 weeks postoperatively. No differences beyond two weeks were found between groups. There was no difference in patient reported outcomes at any time point.
