Effect of vertebroplasty on pain relief, quality of life, and the incidence of new vertebral fractures: a 12-month randomized follow-up, controlled trial

125 patients with osteoporotic vertebral fractures (VF) were randomized to receive either vertebroplasty (VP) or conservative treatment to compare clinical outcomes and to assess the incidence of new vertebral fractures. The assessment at 12 months revealed that vertebroplasty was associated with greater short-term pain relief and early improvement in quality of life than those who received conservative treatment; however, vertebroplasty was associated with a significant increase in the incidence of new vertebral fractures over time.
