A Randomized Trial of Vertebroplasty for Osteoporotic Spinal Fractures
N Engl J Med. 2009 Aug 6;361(6):569-79.131 patients suffering from chronic pain due to vertebral compression fractures (1-3) were randomized to receive either a vertebroplasty or a sham procedure. The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of vertebroplasty in the treatment of painful vertebral fractures. At the one month follow-up, both the vertebroplasty and placebo groups demonstrated improvements in pain measures from baseline; however, there was no significant difference between the two groups, indicating that vertebroplasty produced similar pain relief as the placebo treatment.
