Six studies were included in this analysis which considered the effectiveness of cement augmentation procedures - vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty - in the treatment of vertebral compression fractures. The surgical procedures were compared to control groups of sham or conservative treatment on the basis of pain, functional, and quality of life outcomes, along with incidence of secondary surgery. Results of the analysis indicated that pain, spine-specific functional outcome, and health-related quality of life measures were improved with the use of vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty, and incidence of secondary fracture was similar between the surgical procedures and nonoperative or sham treatment.
