The effect of magnesium added to bupivacaine for arthroscopy: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Three hundred and twelve patients undergoing arthroscopic surgery across six randomized controlled trial were included in this meta-analysis comparing magnesium and bupivacaine compared to bupivacaine alone. The outcomes of interest were duration of analgesia, postoperative pain, analgesic consumption and postoperative nausea and vomiting. Pooled results demonstrated that the addition of magnesium to bupivacaine significantly prolonged the duration of analgesia, time to first analgesic, analgesic consumption and postoperative pain scores. No differences in postoperative nausea and vomiting were found.
