Intra-operative ultrasound: does it improve the results of percutaneous repair of acute Achilles tendon rupture?

Ninety-one patients with acute Achilles tendon ruptures were randomized to undergo a percutaneous repair with intra-operative ultrasound assistance (n=47) or with ultrasound (n=44). The outcomes of interest included American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scores, calf circumference, time to radiographic healing, work, and sport, complications, and intra-operative outcomes. Clinical evaluation was performed at monthly intervals during the first 6 months, then every 3 months until the end of follow-up. Results revealed that the use of intra-operative ultrasound significantly increased operative time but resulted in better AOFAS function scores at 3 months, and quicker time to healing and return to sport vs. control.
