Use of augmented-reality navigation for acetabular component alignment in total hip arthroplasty .
Does An Augmented Reality-based Portable Navigation System Improve the Accuracy of Acetabular Component Orientation During THA? A Randomized Controlled Trial
Clin Orthop Relat Res . 2020 May;478(5):935-943.Fourty-six patients scheduled for a total hip arthroplasty procedure were randomized to receive acetabular component installation guided by an augmented reality navigation program or by the conventional freehand technique. Outcomes of interest included the deviation from target acetabular component inclination and anteversion angles, as well as the difference between intra-operative and post-operative measurements of acetabular component inclination and anteversion angles, by radiograph and computed tomography (CT). Results revealed significantly lower deviation from target acetabular component inclination angles in the augmented reality group in both radiograph and CT measurements. Moreover, the differences between intra-operative and post-operative measurements were significantly lower in the augmented reality group compared to the conventional group, with exception of the difference in acetabular component inclination measured by radiograph. However, these differences were deemed not be clinically relevant.
