One and two femoral neck screws with intramedullary nails for unstable trochanteric fractures of femur in the elderly: Randomised clinical trial

73 osteoporotic elderly patients over the age of 60, scheduled to undergo surgery for an unstable trochanteric fracture with an intramedullary nail were included in the study. Participants were randomized to either undergo the operation using a single neck femoral screw configuration (Gamma) or a two femoral neck screw construct (Ace). Less sliding of the femoral neck screw occurred in the group receiving intramedullary nailing using the two femoral neck screw configuration. However, in these osteoporotic patients, there was no difference between the two groups in terms of clinical functional outcomes.
