A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials of Unilateral Versus Bilateral Kyphoplasty for Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures

4 randomized controlled trials consisting of 209 patients were included in this the meta-analysis which compared the efficacy unilateral and bilateral kyphoplasty for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. The results from the meta-analysis indicated that short- and long-term pain, occurrence of adjacent vertebral fractures in the long-term, incidence of cement leakage, and vertebral height loss rate were similar between patients who underwent unilateral and bilateral kyphoplasty. However, the surgery time and amount of cement used during the operation were significantly less for the unilateral approach group.
