Effects of various types of ultrasound therapy in hip osteoarthritis - a double-blind, randomized, controlled, follow-up study

Seventy-one patients with hip osteoarthritis were randomized to receive conventional therapy with either continuous ultrasound (n=21), pulsed-mode ultrasound (n=17), ultrasound and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (n=15), or sham ultrasound (n=18). Outcomes such as Visual Analog Pain (VAS) pain scores at rest, 6-minute walk test, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) index, short-form-36 (SF-36), and patient global impression of change (PGIC) were assessed at 2 and 14 weeks. No significant differences were apparent between all ultrasound groups when compared to the sham ultrasound for all outcomes at both 2 and 14 weeks.
