Ultrasound-guided technique leads to improvement in sciatic and femoral nerve block .

60 children with distal arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, a disease characterized by immobile joints and contractures due to muscle fibrosis, were randomized to compare the success rate of sciatic and femoral nerve blocks. These children often require corrective surgeries; however the effect of immobile limbs on successfully administering never blockade is unknown. This trial was designed to compare the success of rate of sciatic and femoral nerve blocks using an ultrasound-guided technique or a nerve stimulation technique. Children who received ultrasonography displayed enhanced success rates of sciatic and femoral blocks in arthrogryposis than those who received nerve stimulations.
