Effect of ultrasound-guided pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block on pain during patient positioning for central nervous blockade in hip surgery: a randomized controlled trial.
BMC Anesthesiol . 2023 Sep 15;23(1):316.Eighty-one patients undergoing hip fracture surgery were randomized to receive either a PENG block (n=40) or intravenous fentanyl (n=41) before spinal anesthesia. The primary outcome was pain during positioning for spinal anesthesia. Secondary outcomes included postoperative pain scores, opioid use, time to first analgesia, and Quality of Recovery (QoR-15) scores at 24 hours. Outcomes were assessed over the first 24 hours postoperatively. Overall, the results revealed significantly lower pain during positioning, reduced opioid requirements, delayed time to first analgesia, and improved QoR-15 scores in the PENG group. The findings suggest that preoperative PENG block is effective in improving perioperative pain control and recovery in hip fracture patients.
