Ultrasound-guided genicular nerve blocks following total knee arthroplasty: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

Forty patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive a single-injection genicular nerve block (n=20) or sham injection (n=20). The primary outcome of interest was cumulative opioid consumption at 24h postoperatively. Secondary outcomes of interest included cumulative opioid consumption, pain scores, patient satisfaction and 20m walk time tests. Cumulative opioid consumption was reduced in the nerve block group at 0-24h and 0-48h. The nerve block group had lower pain scores at 6h postoperatively. No differences in pain scores at other time points, patient satisfaction or walk test times were found between the two groups.
