Choice of plate may affect outcomes for single versus multilevel ACDF: Results of a prospective randomized single-blind trial

66 patients undergoing anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for cervical degenerative disc disease were randomized to receive either a cervical plate with slotted-holes (dynamic) or fixed-holes (static). This trial assessed if design of the cervical plate produced differences in fusion rates and clinical outcomes. At final follow-up, there were no differences between the plate types. However, following subgroup analysis of single level and multiple level fusions, the dynamic plate demonstrated significant improvements for patients in multiple level fusion subgroup.
