Is tranexamic acid clinically effective and safe to prevent blood loss in total knee arthroplasty? A meta-analysis of 34 randomized controlled trials

OE Journal. 2015;3(11):4 Eur J Orthop Surg Traumatol. 2015 Apr;25(3):525-4134 randomized controlled trials (2,594 patients) were used in this meta-analysis analyzing the safety and efficacy of tranexamic acid (TXA) in patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Pooled results demonstrated intravenous (IV) and intraarticular (IA) use of TXA significantly reduced total blood loss, postoperative blood loss, hemoglobin (Hb) loss, and blood transfusion without increasing the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or other adverse effects.
