Symptomatic treatment or cast immobilisation for avulsion fractures of the base of the fifth metatarsal: a prospective, randomised, single-blinded non-inferiority controlled trial

60 patients with a closed avulsion fracture of the base of the fifth metatarsal were randomized to nonoperative management though either double-layer elastic bandaging or immobilization with a below-knee walking cast. The purpose of this study was to assess the potential non-inferiority of elastic bandaging to cast immobilization in patient-reported clinical outcome measures over a 6-month follow-up. At 6 months, non-inferiority of elastic bandaging was observed for both the Visual Analog Scale Foot and Ankle (VAS-FA) score and the Euro-QoL 5D score.
