Effect of Zoledronic Acid on Reducing Femoral Bone Mineral Density Loss following Total Hip Arthroplasty Preliminary Results of a Prospective Randomized Trial

51 randomized patients were evaluated to compare the effects of two infusions of Zoledronic acid (ZOL) against a placebo treatment on bone loss density after primary cementless total hip arthroplasty. During the 2 year study period, radiographic data demonstrated that infusions of ZOL at 2 weeks and 1 year after surgery had substantially and safely suppressed bone loss density loss in seven Gruen zones, compared to a placebo. These differences were noted as early as 6 weeks.
