No benefit of the trochanteric stabilizing plate on loss of fracture reduction in AO/OTA 31-A2 trochanteric fractures.

Thirty-two patients diagnosed with AO/OTA 31-A2 trochanteric fractures were randomized into two treatment groups: one group received a sliding hip screw alone (SHS; n=14), while the other group received SHS along with an additional trochanteric stabilizing plate (TSP; n=17). The primary outcome of interest was the migration of the femoral head/neck fragment relative to the shaft, which was assessed through radiostereometric analysis (RSA) and was expressed as total translation (t3D) at one year. Secondary outcomes included translation and rotation around the X-, Y-, and Z-axis at various time points up to one year. The clinical outcomes included pain, assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), along with other parameters such as the EuroQol five-dimension questionnaire (EQ-5D), Harris Hip Score, Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and satisfaction with the operated hip. Overall, the study revealed no significant differences in radiographic migration parameters of the postoperative fracture between the two treatment groups at every time point. This reveals that there is no benefit in adding a trochanteric stabilizing plate to a sliding hip screw when treating patients with similar fractures.
