Treatment of acute opioid withdrawal with ibogaine

In a case series of 33 patients undergoing opioid detoxification, ibogaine was administered at an average dose of 19.3+/-6.9 mg/kg. Patients were evaluated on the signs of opioid withdrawal as well as drug seeking behaviour in the first 72 hours after ibogaine treatment. 25 patients experience full resolution of withdrawal symptoms at 24 hours with no drug seeking behaviour, 4 experienced full resolution of withdrawal symptoms at 24 hours with drug seeking behaviour, 3 patients had partial resolution or multiple withdrawal signs, and 1 patient died possibly linked to heroin overdose, as opioid effects can be exacerbated by ibogaine.
