Comparison of Surgical versus Non-Surgical Treatment of Displaced 3- and 4-Part Fractures of the Proximal Humerus: A Meta-Analysis
J Invest Surg. 2015 Aug;28(4):215-24.5 randomized control trials (RCTs) comparing surgical and non-surgical treatment of displaced 3 or 4-part fractures of the proximal humerus were included in this meta-analysis. The purpose of this study was to determine how patient outcome differed depending on whether a surgical or non-surgical method was used for the treatment of a fracture. Functional outcome was the primary outcome of interest, while quality of life and complication rates were assessed as secondary outcomes. Results indicated no significant difference between groups in terms of functional outcome. Pooled analysis of EuroQoL-5D scores from two studies demonstrated significantly greater scores following surgical versus non-surgical management.
