Transversus Abdominis Plane Block for Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion .
Transversus abdominis plane block for anterior lumbar interbody fusion: a randomized controlled trial.
Spine J . 2023 Aug;23(8):1137-1143.42 patients undergoing anterior lumber interbody fusion (ALIF) were randomized to receive either a transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block with ropivacaine (n=21) or a saline block (n=21). The primary outcome was the consumption of morphine in the first 24 hours post-surgery, while secondary outcomes included immediate postoperative pain, opioid-related side effects, and additional parameters such as the incidence of nausea and vomiting, ileus duration, urinary catheter removal timing, first meal and ambulation times, and overall patient satisfaction at discharge. Morphine consumption at 24 hours post-surgery did not significantly differ between the TAP block and placebo groups, suggesting that the TAP block with ropivacaine did not significantly improve postoperative analgesia compared to a placebo for ALIF surgery.
