A single dose of tranexamic acid reduces blood loss after reverse and anatomic shoulder arthroplasty: a randomized controlled trial.
J Shoulder Elbow Surg. 2021 Jul;30(7): 1553-1560.Sixty patients were randomized to receive a single dose of 2g of intravenous tranexamic acid (TXA) (n=31) or placebo (n=29) prior to undergoing an anatomic or reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. Outcomes of interest included postoperative hemoglobin and hematocrit levels, drain outputs, pain scores and length of stay. The TXA group had significantly higher postoperative hemoglobin, lower changes in hemoglobin levels, higher hematocrit and reduced drain output postoperatively. No significant differences in pain scores, adverse events or hospital length of stay were noted.
