J Arthroplasty. 2013 Jun;28(6):954-9. doi: 10.1016/j.arth.2012.07.045. Epub 2013 Apr 1845 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty were randomized into one of three groups to determine the impact of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practices in the management of immediate postoperative pain. One group was treated with a postoperative protocol that included TCM alone, one group was treated with a protocol that included both TCM and standard rehabilitation, and a control group was allocated to a protocol comprised of only standard rehabilitation. The results over the first 4 to 5 postoperative days indicated that groups managed with TCM offered greater pain relief and experienced benefits in knee flexion compared to the control protocol.
