Tourniquet Does Not Affect Long-term Outcomes in Minor Hand Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open . 2022 Aug 25;10(8):e4495.One hundred and sixty-three patients undergoing surgery for carpal tunnel or trigger finger release were randomized to receive a tourniquet (n=71) or no tourniquet (n=71). Outcomes assessed were the Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire (QuickDASH) and Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ) with the symptom severity scale (SSS) and functional status scale (FSS) subscales. Ultrasound measurements such as the thickness of scar tissue, cross-sectional area (CSA), and palmar bowing of the flexor retinaculum were also recorded at 6 months. Ultrasound outcomes, QuickDASH, and BCTQ scores were similar at all time points between the two groups.
