Evaluation of pain in bilateral total knee replacement with and without tourniquet; a prospective randomized control trial

OE Journal. 2015;3(18):3 J Clin Orthop Trauma. 2015 Jun;6(2):85-8.30 patients undergoing simultaneous bilateral primary total knee replacement (TKR) were randomized to have a tourniquet used for one leg, and no tourniquet use on the other. The purpose of this study was to compare thigh pain between the two legs over the first 6 weeks postoperatively. Pain was assessed using a visual analog scale. The results demonstrated significantly higher thigh pain on postoperative days 1, 2, and 3 for legs on which a tourniquet was applied. No significant difference in pain was noted at 2 and 6 weeks postoperatively.
