Total joint arthroplasty for thumb carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
Acta Orthop . 2024 Jun 18:95:325-332. doi: 10.2340/17453674.2024.40816.Four studies with 420 participants diagnosed with thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint osteoarthritis were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis, comparing total joint arthroplasty (TJA) with trapeziectomy, with or without ligament reconstruction tendon interposition (LRTI). Pooled outcomes focused on pain, hand function, grip strength, pinch strength, and adverse events. The analysis showed that TJA offered a short-term functional advantage at three months, but this benefit was not clinically significant after one year. Pain relief was similar between TJA and trapeziectomy at one year, with no clear evidence of reduced adverse events or reoperation risk with TJA.
