Total disc replacement compared to lumbar fusion: A randomized controlled trial with 2-year follow-up
Eur Spine J. 2009 Oct;18(10):1512-9. Epub 2009 Jun 9.152 patients diagnosed with degenerative disc disease (DDD) at the lumbar level were randomized to receive total disk replacement (TDR) or lumbar fusion. This study compared these two treatment options in a randomized control trial with long-term follow-up. This study indicated that TDR produced better functional outcomes, quicker clinical recovery, and superior reductions in pain at one year post-operative. Superior pain relief in the TDR group was also observed at two year follow-up.
