A prospective double-blind placebo controlled trial of topical tranexamic Acid in total knee arthroplasty
J Arthroplasty. 2013 Sep;28(8 Suppl):78-82101 patients undergoing primary unilateral TKA were randomly assigned into 1 of 2 groups, an intervention (topical tranexamic acid) or a placebo group, to test the effect of tranexamic acid (TNA) on blood loss and transfusion rates. Results demonstrated that patients who received TKA surgery with tranexamic acid experienced less blood loss than those who were given the placebo. A trend was shown that favoured the TNA group with regards to blood transfusion requirements following surgery, but these findings were not significant.
