OE Journal. 2015;3(8):6 Orthop Traumatol Surg Res. 2015 Feb;101(1):83-7.125 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive either 1.5g or 3g of topical tranexamic acid (TXA) in 100mL of povidone-iodine solution, or simply the povidone-iodine solution alone into the knee before wound closure. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of this combination of topical applications on blood loss and infection rate. Secondarily, hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet count, and coagulation parameters were compared. The results indicated that patients receiving tranexamic acid displayed higher hemoglobin levels, and less blood loss, with no difference in complication rates, when compared to the control group.
