Treatment with 4Jointz reduces knee pain over 12 weeks of treatment in patients with clinical knee osteoarthritis: A randomised controlled trial

133 patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) were included in this study to determine the efficacy of 4Jointz (topical comfrey) in the treatment of osteoarthritis. Patients were randomized to receive 4Jointz topical treatment or a placebo. At 12 weeks, the 4Jointz group experienced significantly less pain than the placebo group; however, there were no differences in inflammatory markers or in cartilage breakdown. A significantly greater proportion of patients in the 4Jointz group developed rashes, but there were no other differences in adverse events between the two groups. Further subgroup analyses demonstrated that women and patients with milder OA may benefit the most from 4Jointz treatment.
