The effect of an educational program to improve health-related quality of life in patients with osteoarthritis on waiting list for total knee replacement: a randomized study

100 osteoarthritic patients on a waiting list for total knee replacement (TKR) surgery were randomised to undergo either a therapeutic education and functional readaptation (TEFR) intervention in addition to conventional (pharmacological) treatment or conventional (pharmacological) treatment only. The primary outcome was self-reported health-related quality of life (HRQL). The results indicated that the combined educational intervention with the conventional treatment produced an improvement in function. An increased consumption of analgesics was also observed in the intervention group.
