Accuracy of patellar resection in total knee replacement: A study using the medial pivot knee
Knee. 2005 Jan;12(1):13-980 knees were randomized to receive osteotomy of the patella through sawing or milling. The patella was resected in all patients using three landmarks: the lateral attachment of the patellar tendon distally and the two edges of the quadriceps tendon proximally. Post-operatively, the two groups did not differ in the mean patellar thickness and in the slope of the cut (P angle). Additionally, it was found that P angles of up to 10 degrees did not lead to a patellar tilt. Overall, the use of the three fixed landmarks consistently allowed for accurate resection in respect to depth and slope.
