Analgesia after total knee replacement: local infiltration versus epidural combined with a femoral nerve blockade

90 patients undergoing total knee replacement were randomized to receive either local infiltration analgesia or patient controlled epidural analgesia with femoral nerve blockade to compare them in terms of discharge time. Although the length of hospital stay and discharge time did not vary between the groups, secondary outcome measures of pain during walking/continuous passive movement and opioid consumption seemed to favor patient controlled analgesia and femoral nerve blockade.
