Reducing blood loss in primary knee arthroplasty: a prospective randomised controlled trial of tranexamic acid and fibrin spray

OE Journal. 2013;1(5):6 Knee. 2012 Aug;19(4):295-8. Epub 2011 Jul 566 patients undergoing navigated, cemented total knee arthroplasty were randomized to one of three groups to compare the efficacy of two different haemostatic agents on total blood loss. Patients received a 10mg/kg bolus of tranexamic acid intravenously, topical fibrin spray, or no additional haemostatic treatment (control). The results indicated that both haemostatic agents produced a reduction in total blood loss compared to controls: however, this reduction was only significant in the fibrin spray group.
