Does periarticular injection have additional pain relieving effects during contemporary multimodal pain control protocols for TKA?: A randomised, controlled study

101 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were included in this randomized trial to determine the efficacy of periarticular multimodal drug injections (PMDI), as an adjunct to multimodal pain control protocols that have already been shown to provide sufficient analgesic effects for TKA. Patients received either PMDI with the standard pain control protocol or the standard pain control protocol alone. Results over the course of this trial indicated that the addition of PMDI provided significant reductions in post-operative pain and opioid use over the first 24 hours compared to the standard pain control protocol alone, without increasing the incidence of complications.
