Peri-articular steroid injection in total knee arthroplasty: a prospective, double blinded, randomized controlled trial

127 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomized to determine the effect of peri-articular infiltration of both low- and high-dose corticosteroids on postoperative pain and function. Participants in experimental groups were allocated to receive either 80mg or 40mg of triamcinolone acetate with the infiltration of local anaesthetic and adrenaline, while control patients received no triamcinolone acetate. Patients were followed-up for 12 weeks postoperatively, and results at the end of the study period indicated that patients treated with either dose of steroid did not experience any appreciable reduction in pain or improvement in range of motion compared to control patients.
