Fixed versus mobile weight-bearing prosthesis in total knee arthroplasty

Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc. 2012 Dec;20(12):2519-27. doi: 10.1007/s00167-012-1946-1. Epub 2012 Mar 15

300 patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomized and received either fixed weight-bearing or mobile weight-bearing prostheses to assess the rate of recovery. Despite both groups showing significant improvements in their health, there was no statistical difference in Knee Society Scores, SF-36 scores and patellofemoral joint function scores between the groups at the five-year follow-up assessment. Hence, there was no clear advantage in terms of clinical, radiological, or general health outcomes between fixed or mobile weight-bearing prostheses.
