Efficacy of intra-articular tranexamic acid in blood loss reduction following primary unilateral total knee arthroplasty

Fifty patients with knee osteoarthritis undergoing primary unilateral cemented-TKA were randomized to receive either intra-articular tranexamic acid (TA) or saline solution (control). After the first 48 hours, the parameters related to the drain output were compared between the two groups. Blood loss on 5th post-operative day was also noted. Results demonstrated that patients who received tranexamic acid obtained a noticeable reduction in drain output and showed a lower drop in haemoglobin and haematocrit than the control group.
