Intra-articular injection of tranexamic acid reduces not only blood loss but also knee joint swelling after total knee arthroplasty
Int Orthop; 2011; 35(11):1639-1645100 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) due to osteoarthritis were randomized to receive either an intra-articular injection of tranexamic acid (TXA) or saline (control). The post-operative results of the study indicated that the blood loss and subsequent drop in the hemoglobin levels were significantly reduced in patients that received TXA. Additionally, knee joint swelling was also significantly lesser in these patients compared to controls.
