Efficacy of multimodal cocktail periarticular injection with or without steroid in total knee arthroplasty

72 Chinese patients, less than 75 years old who underwent unilateral TKA for osteoarthritis were randomized to compare the postoperative analgesic ability of a multimodal cocktail periarticular injection (MCPI) with steroids to those without steroids. Patients were evaluated over 12 months using a visual analogue scale and several other secondary measures. The evidence presented in this study indicated that pain was not significantly different between groups. In addition, the MCPI with corticosteroid led to faster rehabilitation and less NSAID consumption among patient, with no added risk of infection or tendon rupture, compared to MCPI without steroids.
