Periarticular injection with corticosteroid has an additional pain management effect in total knee arthroplasty

82 female patients undergoing bilateral TKA were randomized to evaluate the efficacy of steroid-based periarticular injection (PI) compared to non-steroid PI over 6 months. Treatments were assessed based on patient postoperative night pain on the night of the surgery as assessed by a VAS scale, along with secondary measures of functional recovery (straight leg raising (SLR) and maximal flexion), patient satisfaction, and complications. The evidence presented in study indicated that a corticosteroid element in PI may result in improved perioperative pain and patient satisfaction in TKA patients. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to validate these findings.
