Changes in the bone mineral density in the acetabulum and proximal femur after cementless total hip replacement: ALUMINA-ON-ALUMINA VERSUS ALUMINA-ON-POLYETHYLENE ARTICULATION

J Bone Joint Surg Br. 2007 Feb;89(2):174-9.
Contributing Authors

YH Kim SH Yoon JS Kim

50 patients (100 hips) underwent total hip replacement surgery, with one hip receiving alumina, and the opposite hip receiving ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), as the acetabular lining material (identical in geometry). This study aimed to evaluate changes in bone mineral density between these liner materials. The results at the end of the five year study indicated no significant difference in the bone mineral density changes of the acetabulum and the femur in both hips.
