LSD and Ditran produced changes in EEG patterns. These changes included increased beta activity, higher amplitudes and decreased mono-lateral rhythmical patterns. Patients who exhibited these changes in EEG patterns showed greater improvement in response to the psychotropic drugs. The results are limited by the small sample size and the lack of a control group.

Seventeen schizophrenic patients resistant to psychotropic drugs underwent a study to investigate the effects of LSD and Ditran in therapy-resistant schizophrenic patients. Nine patients were given LSD while the remaining eight were given Ditran. The hallucinogens were then discontinued after a maximum of 3 months and conventional psychotropic drugs were administered, while EEG was recorded. EEG desynchronization was accompanied by activation of psychotic symptoms. Patients then became more responsive to the usual psychotropic drugs.
