The Safety and Effectiveness of Tranexamic Acid in Lumbar Interbody Fusion Surgery: An Updated Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
World Neurosurg . 2022 Oct:166:198-211.Twelve randomized controlled trials including 1088 patients undergoing PLIF surgery were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing tranexamic acid (TXA) vs. placebo. Pooled outcomes of interest included intraoperative blood loss, total blood loss, hidden blood loss, operative time, postoperative drainage, postoperative hemoglobin and hematocrit levels, length of hospital stay, transfusion rates, and thromboembolic events. TXA significantly reduced blood loss across all phases, shortened operative time and hospital stay, and decreased transfusion needs without increasing the risk of thromboembolic events. These findings suggest TXA is an effective and safe agent to reduce surgical blood loss in lumbar fusion procedures.
