The efficiency of tactile discrimination training and oculomotor exercises in people with chronic neck pain: a randomized controlled trial.
BMC Musculoskelet Disord . 2025 May 27;26(1):519.Fifty-seven adults with chronic non-specific neck pain were randomized to tactile discrimination training (TDT) (n=19), oculomotor exercises (OEs) (n=19), or a wait-list control group (n=19). Participants in the active groups completed 24-minute sessions three times per week for four weeks, while controls received no intervention. The primary outcome was pain intensity. Secondary outcomes included neck pain–related disability, pressure pain thresholds (PPTs), mechanical temporal summation of pain (mTSP), and conditioned pain modulation (CPM). Outcomes were assessed at baseline and four weeks. Overall, the results revealed that both TDT and OEs significantly improved pain intensity and disability, with OEs producing the greatest reductions in pain; OEs also improved PPTs at the painful site. The control group showed only modest improvement in mTSP. In conclusion, both somatosensory-based interventions were effective, with oculomotor exercises demonstrating superior pain reduction after four weeks.
